The two had overlapping shifts at a club in Minneapolis.

Recent reports have revealed that George Floyd and Derek Chauvin, the police officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck in the viral video captured before his death, both worked security at a club in Minneapolis.

During a segment on MSNBC, Andrea Jenkins, Vice President of Minneapolis City Council, discussed how the two worked at worked security at the El Nuevo Rodeo club.

“George Floyd worked at that restaurant. So did Officer Chauvin. They were both bouncers at that restaurant for 17 years,” Jenkins said. “So Officer Chauvin, he knew George. They were coworkers for a very long time.”

However, the club’s former owner, Maya Santamaria, has since clarified that although the two worked at the club, they may not have known each other. Santamaria, who sold the club last year, said that Chauvin served as the club’s off-duty police “for almost the entirety of the 17 years that we were open,” according to a report from KSTP-TV. Floyd worked as a bouncer at the club for 2019.

“They were working together at the same time; it’s just that Chauvin worked outside and the security guards were inside,” she said.

The KSTP-TV report also noted that “Although the two overlapped working security on popular music nights within the last year, Santamaria can not say for certain they knew each other because there were often a couple dozen security guards, including off-duty officers.”

In a separate interview with the Star Tribune, Santamaria said of the two that “If they would have crossed paths, it would probably not have been something they remembered.”
