Blow is now a week removed from his second emergency surgery in two years.

As the golden generation of hip-hop ages, many rappers are embracing the notion that health is wealth. Kurtis Blow is the latest example of that. On Tuesday, Blow took to Instagram to reflect on his recent health struggles.

“Last week I had another emergency surgery,” Blow said. “My spleen was bleeding into my stomach. I went to the ER just in time because my wife made me go. I wanted to go in the morning. The surgeon said I was lucky to make [it] in time. They took out my spleen and saved my life.”

In May 2019, Blow underwent surgery for a hematoma at UCLA’s medical center. Subsequently, he was summoned for an emergency open-heart surgery. These are just the latest in the battles Blow has fought over the years.

In 2016, Blow suffered multiple heart attacks at a bus stop in San Fernando Valley, California. According to his Instagram caption, this last surgery was his seventh overall.

“My spleen had splattered and I was bleeding internally,” he continued. “I am in recovery now and I thank God for the great physician and Dr. Jamali. The great surgeon Dr. Schriver and all the nurses and assistants at West Hills Hospital. Thanks to my wife and fam for all your prayers. Thank God for still another chance. 7 operations. A cat with 9 lives – Amen!”
