In the wake of the endorsement, social media users shared offensive clips from Rogan’s past.

As the Democratic primaries approach, political tensions have begun to heat up. From exchanges made at campaign events to decades-old quotes, no conversation starter is off-limits.

On Thursday, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders posted a clip from The Joe Rogan Experience on his official Twitter account. In the video, which is from episode #1415 with New York Times Opinion editor Bari Weiss, Rogan says that he would “probably” vote for Sanders in the upcoming primary.

“I think I’ll probably vote for Bernie,” Rogan said. “I like him a lot…you could dig up dirt on every single human being that’s ever existed if you catch them in their worst moment and only display those moments. That said, you can’t find very many with Bernie. He’s been insanely consistent his whole life. And that in and of itself is a very powerful structure to operate from.”

Unfortunately for Sanders, Rogan is as controversial a figure as he is influential. In the wake of Sanders supporting Rogan’s endorsement, Twitter users and media outlets began circulating clips from past episodes of Rogan’s podcast. In one, Rogan compares a Black neighborhood to the movie Planet of the Apes.

Users also started retweeting a clip featuring the many times Rogan has said the N-word on his show.

Rogan has also received backlash for making transphobic and homophobic comments in the past.

Rogan has welcomed controversial guests onto the show before. Besides Sanders, Rogan hosted notable right-wing pundits like Milo Yiannapoulos and Alex Jones.

Sanders’ decision to broadcast the endorsement has sparked debates in progressive circles. Some believe the decision somehow validates Rogan’s right-wing followers. Others believe the endorsement is a sign of Sanders’ reach outside the Democratic party’s traditional base.

Democratic primaries begin in Iowa on February 3. Bernie Sanders is leading the Iowa polls.
