In the wake of the endorsement, social media users shared offensive clips from Rogan’s past.
As the Democratic primaries approach, political tensions have begun to heat up. From exchanges made at campaign events to decades-old quotes, no conversation starter is off-limits.
On Thursday, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders posted a clip from The Joe Rogan Experience on his official Twitter account. In the video, which is from episode #1415 with New York Times Opinion editor Bari Weiss, Rogan says that he would “probably” vote for Sanders in the upcoming primary.
“I think I’ll probably vote for Bernie… He’s been insanely consistent his entire life. He’s basically been saying the same thing, been for the same thing his whole life. And that in and of itself is a very powerful structure to operate from.” -Joe Rogan pic.twitter.com/fuQP0KwGGI

“I think I’ll probably vote for Bernie,” Rogan said. “I like him a lot…you could dig up dirt on every single human being that’s ever existed if you catch them in their worst moment and only display those moments. That said, you can’t find very many with Bernie. He’s been insanely consistent his whole life. And that in and of itself is a very powerful structure to operate from.”
Unfortunately for Sanders, Rogan is as controversial a figure as he is influential. In the wake of Sanders supporting Rogan’s endorsement, Twitter users and media outlets began circulating clips from past episodes of Rogan’s podcast. In one, Rogan compares a Black neighborhood to the movie Planet of the Apes.
Watch Joe Rogan, who endorsed Bernie, compare Black People to “The Planet of the Apes.”
Bernie’s campaign sure attracts Openly Racists jerks. pic.twitter.com/yX79yDKT7O

Users also started retweeting a clip featuring the many times Rogan has said the N-word on his show.

Rogan has also received backlash for making transphobic and homophobic comments in the past.
Joe Rogan talking about his theory that childhood sexual abuse is what makes some people gay.
Oh, and he is sharing this theory with the founder of the alt-right Proud Boys.
This is the guy Bernie proudly announced as his new endorser yesterday. https://t.co/ZceMqOfFMp

Joe Rogan also had friendly interviews with Milo Yiannopolous & Jordan Peterson, yelled “you’re a fucking man” on-air about a trans woman, vocally argued against allowing trans kids puberty blockers THIS YEAR, says “f*g,” and believes the world is stacked against men, so. Enjoy. https://t.co/X1oFy71elf

Joe Rogan is horrifically anti-trans. Tired of seeing @BernieSanders throw people he claims to be in allyship with under the bus to pander to the aggrieved white male crowd. https://t.co/IqTssBoUKQ

Bernie’s campaign cutting a campaign ad with Joe Rogan fucking sucks. Rogan is an incredibly influential bigot and Democrats should be marginalizing him.

Rogan has welcomed controversial guests onto the show before. Besides Sanders, Rogan hosted notable right-wing pundits like Milo Yiannapoulos and Alex Jones.
Sanders’ decision to broadcast the endorsement has sparked debates in progressive circles. Some believe the decision somehow validates Rogan’s right-wing followers. Others believe the endorsement is a sign of Sanders’ reach outside the Democratic party’s traditional base.
Bernie’s strength is that he can win over some voters who are skeptical of Democrats – like Joe Rogan. If you think getting Trump out of office is actually important, that’s a good thing, and he should lean into it.

Bernie is not my candidate but it seems obvious to me that he was right to take the Joe Rogan endorsement. One premise of his campaign is that he can win some number of alienated men with reactionary social views to the left, and this is proof of concept.
